Pope Sixtus V with the brief ‘Cum nos nuper’ of 26 June 1586 grants the Company of the Ministers of the Infirm to wear in perpetuity on the right side of their habit a red, tan-coloured Cross.

SISTO V PAPA

In perpetual memory.

  1. Dress question.

Recently, We, with Apostolic authority, approved and confirmed the Company or Congregation called “Ministers of the Infirm”, initiated by Camillus de Lellis, Priest of the Theatine Diocese, and his Companions, with Our approval and that of the Apostolic See.

The approval is fully contained in our letter of 18 March, written in the form of a Brief.

Now the same Camillus and Companions, for a happier development of the Congregation, wish that, just as their Institute is distinguished from others, so their habit should be distinguished from that of others.

  1. Granting of the habit.

We, bearing in mind the contents of the aforesaid Brief, on the advice of our beloved sons the Cardinals of H.R.C., deputed by Apostolic authority to the state of the Regulars, hereby grant Camillus and the other Superiors and persons of the said Congregation the permission and faculty to wear in perpetuity, on their robes on the right side, a Cross of coarse cloth of a reddish colour, called in the vernacular tané.

  1. 3. Exception clause and date.

This applies notwithstanding any Constitution and Apostolic Ordination or any other provision to the contrary.

Given at Rome at St. Peter’s, under the ring of the Fisherman, on the 26th day of June 1586, the second year of Our Pontificate.

Tho. Thom. Gualteruzio
