WORKS OF MERCY BROTHER ETTORE BOSCHINI: A SAINT, A HISTORY
CLOTHING THE NAKED – HOUSING STRANGERS

D

A small book by Natale Benazzi, a theologian and essayist, has recently appeared in the bookshops and it belongs to the context of the theological and pastoral reflections of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The title concerns two of the seven works of corporeal mercy.

A practical exemplification of the daily and consistent practice of these two works of mercy is taken specifically from the human and spiritual history, the history of faith and Camillian consecration, of our religious brother, Brother Ettore Boschini.

Sampran

On 24-27 April at the St. Camillus Chapel of the Centre of Sampran we celebrated the Easter triduum. We had never witnessed such an attendance at this religious ceremony. Many faithful joined our young men receiving formation and our elderly guests. Each day one of our fathers presided over the services and they truly made the liturgy solemn. On Easter Day we sang a number of songs in Vietnamese and one of the readings was read out in this language because for this occasion a group of more than a hundred Vietnamese lay young people who work in the area joined us. We can say that we experienced an Easter with a Pentecostal scent! We thank the Risen Lord for these moments that were so rich in graces.

Father Bernard Kinvi 1

P. Bernard Kinvi

Our religious brother from Togo Fr. Bernard Kinvi who saved 1,500 Muslims is one of the four ‘angels’ who are candidates for the ‘Aurora Prize.’

He risked his life to save more than 1,500 Muslims. Father Bernard Kinvi, a missionary from Togo in Central Africa, is one of the four finalists for the Aurora Prize, a prize that was established for those who protected the Armenians during the genocide of 1915. Fr. Bernard has been living for four years in the town of Bossemptele, in the north-east of the country. When in 2013 the brutal civil war began, Central Africa was divided into two parts: on the one side, there were the Muslim rebels of Seleka, on the other, the ‘anti-Balaka’ Christian militias. This last group had chosen as a target for many months the mission of Bossemptele, looking for Muslims to kill. But Kinvi, a young man of 34, in addition to taking in hundreds of them managed to enable many others to flee across the frontier with neighbouring Cameron. ‘It was not a decision but something that simply happened’, observed this missionary to the British newspaper The Guardian.

On 14 April the ceremony took place for the blessing and the inauguration of the area for the expansion of the St Camillus Health Care System of Milwaukee.

‘The work that we are beginning today is our humble effort to continue the mission of St. Camillus who during the whole of the course of his life committed himself to, and engaged in, service to the sick and those most in need! These were the words of Fr. Pedro Tramontin, the Camillian Delegate in the USA. Each time that we take an interest, that we are concerned about our next-door neighbour and our community, we are specifically authentic co-workers of God’.

The institution will be dedicated to receiving, accommodating and caring for ‘elderly’ religious of the Order of Jesuits which financed this work and has for years shared with us this form of cooperation and the assistance provided by its priests and brothers.

This is an experience engaged in with the Camillian community of Acireale-Mangano in Sicily and is an initiative of the Province of Sicily and Naples. The aim of this experience is to open the doors of its own ministry and life in common to those who ask whether they have a vocation and are attracted by the charism of mercy of Camillian religious. It will involve fraternal life, prayer, communal and personal exploration of the ‘vocational question’, nearness to, and service for, the sick and the suffering, until September, with in view a final stage between June and July of next year.

Madonna Salus Infirmorum

On 10-12 June 2016, Pope Francis will celebrate in Rome the Jubilee of the Sick and the Disabled, sensitising all those who experience illness and cultivate the sensibility of providing care. The event will witness the participation of many faithful from all over the world.

On Sunday 12 June, the venerated picture of Our Lady Salus Infirmorum, which has been kept for centuries at our Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Campo Marzio in Rome, will be on view in St. Peter’s Square during the celebration of the Eucharist presided over by the Holy Father.

In the intentions of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelisation which recently sent the request to us, the veneration of this Marian icon invokes the mercy of God expressed through the tenderness of Mary, which has been cultivated and spread by Camillian religious since the beginning of the foundation of the Order specifically according to the spirit of St. Camillus.

san camillo ei suoi amici

San Camillo de Lellis e i suoi amici. Ordini religiosi e arte tra Barocco e Rinascimento

In the near future the publishing house Rubbettino will publish San Camillo de Lellis e i suoi amici. Ordini religiosi e arte tra Barocco e Rinascimento (‘St. Camillus de Lellis and his Friends. Religious Orders and Art between the Renaissance and the Baroque’) edited by Fr. Eugenio Sapori and Prof. Lydia Salviucci Insolera. The volume forms a part of the series Collana di Storia dell’Ordine di San Camillo directed by Prof. Andrea Ciampani

From the introduction by Lydia Salviucci Insolera (of the Pontifical Gregorian University):

On 22-23 October 2013 a conference on ‘St. Camillus and his friends. Religious Orders and Art between the Renaissance and the Baroque’ took place at the generalate house of the Ministers of the Sick (Camillians) in the historic heart of the city of Rome.

The idea of such a conference was to analyse the points of contact in the artistic world of the Renaissance and the Baroque between the various religious Orders that were in Rome and between their respective houses outside Rome, having, however, as a central reference point St. Camillus de Lellis and the Camillian religious. From the outset, this project was favourably received by the Camillian Eugenio Sapori who had the idea of proposing it as a special cultural initiative to be placed within the framework of the celebrations for the fourth centenary of the death of St. Camillus de Lellis – 1614-2014.

During the two days of this conference an attempt was made to probe the relationship between the various forms of spirituality of the religious Orders and art, with reference to their mutual influences as well. An analysis was engaged in of the application of the charism of each Order to this area on the basis of their respective commissions in the field of architecture and the figurative arts. An attempt was thus made to assess the connections, the divergences, and the choices of similar or opposing styles. All of this, however, was placed within the constant and circular discourse which marked the relationships of friendship and spiritual sharing of the various religious Orders which were protagonists of the Church between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Rome – the Capuchins, Jesuits, Oratorians, Theatines, Carmelites, etc. There thus emerged the charismatic personalities of the great saints of the epoch who were friends: one need only think of St. Camillus de Lellis himself who was a friend of St. Philip Neri, who in his turn was a friend of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Through the numerous papers of the various speakers who were from important Italian and foreign universities and institutions, it was possible to reconstruct an initial accurate outline of the direct and indirect contacts of the various religious Orders with St. Camillus de Lellis, although allowing ample space was also given to an exploration of the specific commissions of the Camillian religious.

On Wednesday 18 May in hall n. C008 of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Piazza della Pilotta 4, there will be the launch of this volume. The following will speak: Roberto Regoli, Director of the Department of History, Faculty of the History and the Cultural Heritage of the Church, and Marco Bussagli of the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome. The chairman will be Nuno da Silva Gonçalves S.J., Dean of the Faculty of the History and the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
