BEING A CAMILLIAN AND SAMARITAN TODAY
This book, entitled ‘Being a Camillian and Samaritan Today, with your Heart in your Hands, in the Existential and Geographical Fringes of the World of Health’, is the result of the (canonical) fraternal and pastoral visits of the Superior General and the members of the General Consulta to various geographical areas of the Order of Camillians during the course of the first three years (July 2014-July 2017) of the six-year period 2014-2020.
The messages, thoughts and recommendations of the Superior General and the members of the General Consulta have been brought together in a single volume and arranged in chronological order according to the dates of the visits. These messages have already been published in the review Camilliani/Camillians and were addressed above all else to the circa 1,070 Camillian religious who live in almost 300 communities in 41 countries of the world.
In this way, the duty laid down in the General Statutes of the Order about pastoral visits and visitators was complied with: ‘The visitator listens to all the religious, individually. In this personal interview, he endeavours to ascertain whether, within the community, there exists the common life, the spirit of fraternal charity, and the commitment to our Order, for the purpose of promoting the religious and apostolic life’ (GS, n. 110); ‘After mature reflection, the visitator gives a report of the recommendations he considers opportune. With exactness, he informs the general consulta of the visitation, and transmits the relative documents to it. He should avoid exceeding the limits of his ordinary or delegated authority’ (GS, n. 111).
The preface is organised into four parts: the Camillian project for the revitalisation of our consecrated lives and the current ecclesial context; the meetings with our religious in the geographical and existential fringes of the Order; the structure and contents of this book and its objectives; and some statistical data on the journeys and pastoral visits that were engaged in.
THIS BOOK HAS ALSO BEEN TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH, FRENCH AND SPANISH

THE PROVINCE OF BRAZIL
Mario Luis Kozik, a religious of the Province of Brazil, has photographed for us the stained glass windows of the Nossa Senhora de Lujan Basilica in Argentina. They depict some scenes from the life of St. Camillus.
THE PROVINCE OF INDIA
The Camillian Province of India welcomes the nine young novices and celebrates the renewal of the religious vows of another three religious. We wish them a joyous following of the example of St. Camillus in daily service to the cause of sick people and of poor people.
25 May, the birthday of St. Camillus, was a day of joy for the Camillians of the Province of India. Brother Meteyil Ajeesh Chakco made his first profession during the celebration of the Eucharist which was presided over by the Provincial Superior Fr. Baby Ellickal.
THE PROVINCE OF GERMANY
Three Camillian religious were ordained priests in 1992 in the cathedral of Freiberg. One of them, Fr. Heiner Rössing, is already dead. The other two, Fr. Siegmund Malinowski – the former Superior General of the Province of Germany– and Fr. Arno Geiger, the Superior of the community of Freiberg, celebrated the happy anniversaries of their ordination. The homily of the Holy Mass of thanksgiving was given by Fr. Ferdinand Pützhoven, who was Superior of the community when these two priests, who were being celebrated, were young novices. Fr. Jörg Gabriel, the current Provincial Superior of the Province of Germany, also spoke.
THE PROVINCE OF SPAIN
The ties of cooperation between the Camillian Province of Spain and the Vice-Province of Peru will continue for the new three-year period of 2017-2020.
THE PROVINCE OF SICILY AND NAPLES
In the Archdiocese of Manfredonia-Vieste-S. Giovanni Rotondo, the Camillian religious celebrated the birthday of St. Camillus of 25 May in two hospitals, the Hospital of St. Camillus in Manfredonia and the Hospital of St. Michael in Monte Sant’Angelo. In the respective chapels of these hospitals two new icons for public veneration were blessed.
On 13-21 July the community of Acireale organised a camp service for young people. This was an example of solidarity following the example of St. Camillus. POSTER

VALLE DELL’INFERNO… HOW IT WILL BE
This is ‘Valle dell’Inferno’, the place where St. Camillus had his conversion on 2 February 1575. After four centuries, still today pilgrims and people devoted to him who come to this place find themselves lost in a desert land, without even a rock on which to sit or pray. As a commemoration of the conversion of our saint, there is only an altar with a large red cross, but the area around it is abandoned to the elements, and there is no protection or defence against grazing animals or passing predators. St. Camillus does not deserve this! The illustration that we reproduce here shows what we want to do to transform this miserable valley into a welcoming and sacred place. However, we need, and urgently, small and large contributions from all of you who are devoted to him! May God protect and bless you!

THE WOMEN MINISTERS OF THE SICK
The women Ministers of the Sick announce the death of their dear Sister Candida Bellotti. On 20 February of this year she celebrated her one hundred and tenth birthday. This is a record and indeed Sister Candida was believed to be the oldest woman religious in the world. She spent the last year of her life in a peaceful way in Lucca at the ‘Mother House’ of the Institute where the objects which commemorate the founder of the Order, the Blessed Maria Domenica Brun Barbantini, are conserved. Let us keep our gaze fixed on the Cross: there is found any authority in the Church, where the One who is the Lord becomes a servant to the point of the total gift of himself’ (Pope Francis to those taking part in the plenary assembly of the International Union of Superior Generals, Wednesday, 8 May 2013).
This is a propitious opportunity to express at the end of this three-year period to all the Major Superiors who are ending their mandates and to their councillors, feelings of gratitude for the service of authority, guidance, animation support and merciful patience that you have engaged in over these three years. One aspect of the subject was addressed by three Superior Generals from Africa, Asia and Latin America who brought to the meeting the experiences of their Institutes. One of these Superior Generals was Fr. Leocir Pessini.
