Monsignor Menichelli ordina due confratelli sacerdoti nel santuario San Camillo di Bucchianico

The Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo EDOARDO MENICHELLI is one of the twenty new Cardinals on whom Pope Francis will confer the Cardinal’s hat on 14 February next at his second consistory.

   H.E. Msgr. Edoardo Menichelli was born in Serripola di San Severino Marche (Macerata-Italy) on 14 October 1939.

He engaged in his secondary-school studies at the Seminary of San Severino Marche and studied philosophy and theology at the Pius XI Pontifical Regional Seminary in Fano. In Rome, at the Pontifical Lateran University, he was awarded a licence in the theology of pastoral care.

He was ordained a priest on 3 July 1965. The diocese that he comes from is San Severino Marche which in 1986 was united with the Archdiocese of Camerino and called the Archdiocese of Camerino-San Severino Marche.

After his ordination as a priest, from 1965 to 1968, he worked as a vice-parish priest at St. Joseph’s Parish in San Severino Marche and at the same time he had a position as a teacher of religion in the state schools of that city.

From 1968 to 1991 he worked as an Official at the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. Subsequently, from 1992 to 1994, he was called to work with the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, with a post in the secretariat. He also held the post of special secretary to the then Prefect, Cardinal Achille Silvestrini. In the meantime he engaged in pastoral care at the Roman Parish of the Most Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary and as a chaplain at the Mafalda Clinic. He also worked at the Family Clinic of the Faculty of Medicine of the Gemelli Polyclinic. He took an active part in the Synod of the diocese of Rome. On 10 June he was appointed the Archbishop of Chiesti-Vasto. On 8 January 2004 he was appointed the Metropolitan Archbishop of Ancona-Osimo.

Within the Italian Bishops’ Conference he has been Vice-President of the Bishops’ Conference of the Marches and a member of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education, Schools and Universities. He was a member by pontifical appointment of the recent Third Extraordinary Assembly of Bishops on the Family (October 2014) where he was a speaker at the ‘A’ Italian minor circle.

Msgr. Menichelli, specifically because of the esteem and love that he demonstrated in a practical way towards Sr. Camillus and the promotion of the Order in the diocese of Chieti, was aggregated to the Order of the Camillians by the Superior General on 14 July 2004.

   To this new Cardinal our best wishes from our Institute with the promise of a special prayer to the Lord through the intercession of St. Camillus that he may continue with solicitude his ministry as a pastor, above all else with the sick and those who with their knowledge and due conscience take care of them!
