The Camillians of Messina are preparing to celebrate the fourth centenary of the death of St. Camillus de Lellis with a series of events and initiatives from now until 14 July 2014.
The relationship of the Founder of the Order with this Sicilian city goes back to 1599 when a new house of the Order of the Ministers of the Sick was founded, the first on the island. Camillus, beginning in 1601, visited the city on a number of occasions. The heirs of the Giant of Charity since then have always been appreciated and esteemed for their work by the citizenry and the authorities and to such an extent that in 1755, by popular demand, St. Camillus was proclaimed the patron saint of Messina.
The programme, beginning with the inauguration of the jubilee year on 14 July of this year and going on until 14 July 2014, is very rich, with conferences, the launching of books, concerts, pilgrimages, ceremonies and special functions. To sum up: spirituality and culture will be united in Messina to celebrate the patron saint of all the sick in a worthy way.
