St. Camullus de Lellis died on 14 July 1514. Yesterday, 14 July, exactly four hundred years since his death, the ‘Giant of charity’ was commemorated at the generalate house of the Camillians in Rome, where he lived, where he died and where today his mortal remains are kept.
The day was opened at 8.00 with a celebration of the Eucharist at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene presided over by Father Paolo Guarise. Immediately afterwards, at 9.30, Monsignor Prosper Kontiebo, the Camillian Bishop of the Diocese of Tenkodogo in Burkina Faso, celebrated a Holy Mass in which the women Missionary Workers of the Immaculate Mary took part.
In the late morning, at 11.30, there was a third celebration of the Eucharist, this time presided over by Father Matteo Nonini, the chaplain of the Celio Military Polyclinic of Rome, in the presence of civil and military authorities who work in that hospital.
In the afternoon, at 19.00, there was the solemn Holy Mass to close the jubilee year presided over by the new Superior General, Father Leocir Pessini, who officially inaugurated the new central government of the Order.
Lastly, at 21:00 (the hour that St. Camillus died on 14 July 1614) there was the celebration of the Transit (the last days on earth of St. Camillus) presided over by Msgr. Zygmunt Zimowski, the President of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers.
During the day various groups visited the museum dedicated to St. Camillus and in particular the infirmary (Cubiculum), where the saint died, stopping in prayer in front of the relic of his heart.
Another important appointment was the press conference organised in the Chapter Hall, which allowed the new Superior General of the Camillians, Father Leocir Pessini, and all the members of the General Consulta, to present themselves in front of journalists and to answer their questions.
Reference should also be made to the postage stamp and the special franking of the Italian Post Office to commemorate the fourth centenary of the death of St. Camillus.
